iOS 17.5 has been released for download, bringing new features focused on enhancing privacy and security. The update coincides with the release of iPadOS 17.5, just before the launch of Apple's new iPad Air (2024) and iPad Pro (2024) in India and global markets.
Notable additions include the ability to identify unknown third-party item trackers and the option for users in the EU to download apps from websites instead of relying on third-party apps or the App Store.
The rollout of iOS 17.5 commenced on Monday night, allowing users with iPhone 15 or older models, including the iPhone XR, to access the update. A significant enhancement exclusive to EU customers is Web Distribution for iOS apps.
This allows users in the region to download Apple-notarised apps directly from developer websites, simplifying the process of 'sideloading' apps without the need for alternative app stores introduced in iOS 17.4.
Furthermore, the update introduces cross-platform support for detecting unknown item trackers, a feature developed in collaboration with Google.
This enables the detection of AirTags and devices compatible with Google's Find My Device network, enhancing security for both iOS and Android users against unknown trackers. iOS 17.5 also includes a Repair State feature, permitting users to maintain Find My and Activation Lock settings when sending their iPhone for repair.
This feature replaces the previous policy that required users to disable these settings before repair to prevent theft concerns.
Users updating to iOS 17.5 can enjoy new features such as an offline mode on Apple News+ for access to the news tab and Today feed without an internet connection. Subscribers can also engage with a new game called Quartiles, while the Apple Podcasts widget now supports a dynamic background reflecting the latest podcast being played.
To install iOS 17.5, users with an iPhone XR or newer can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update > Install Now. The same process applies to install the latest iPadOS 17.5 on compatible devices.
