A Closer Look at the Powerful 435hp PHEV Powertrain of the BYD Shark Pickup Truck

BYD has recently introduced the new Shark pickup truck in Mexico, marking its debut in the pickup truck segment. The Shark is BYD’s inaugural pickup model, featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain that aligns with the brand’s 'Ocean Series collection.

This series also includes the Seal sedan, the Seal U SUV, and the Dolphin hatchback. In terms of design, the BYD Shark presents itself as a traditional double-cab pickup truck with distinctive styling cues such as a prominent BYD emblem at the front.

Noteworthy exterior elements include C-shaped LED DRLs connected by a light bar, which is mirrored in the tail lamps. The truck also showcases a debossed BYD logo on the tailgate. Inside the cabin, the pickup truck boasts dual digital displays - a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch instrumentation screen.

The dashboard features vertical AC vents, an open storage area, and rear AC vents positioned beneath the central infotainment screen. Additional features include a 12-inch head-up display, a 50W wireless charger, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a karaoke function, and a surround-view monitor, among others.

The BYD Shark measures 5,457mm in length, 1,971mm in width, and stands at 1,925mm tall. Under the hood, the BYD Shark is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system named DMO (dual-mode off-road), delivering a total output of 435hp.

This PHEV setup is designed to enhance off-road capabilities, enabling the Shark to accelerate from 0-100kph in just 5.7 seconds. The truck can travel up to 100km on electric power alone, with a 20-minute charge time for 30-80% battery capacity.

Featuring a body-on-frame construction, the Shark offers a payload capacity of 835 kg and a towing capacity of 2,500kg, supported by independent front and rear suspension.

While BYD recently introduced the Seal EV in the Indian market, joining the E6 MPV and Atto 3 SUV in its lineup, the brand is unlikely to launch the Shark PHEV in India due to the niche status of the pickup truck segment in the country.
